It keeps many original elements such as eave returns, a symmetrical plan and an early entrance door. Its survival amid twentieth century tract development is described as rare in the city.","narrative":"Set back almost half a block from Cornelia Street in Plattsburgh, this 1 1/2 storey stone house was built around 1825 by Judge William Bailey. Bailey had worked in the iron business in Chateaugay before moving to Plattsburgh in 1812. His second wife was the daughter of Nathaniel Platt, who owned a house on the site in the 1790s. After that house burned in 1822, Bailey built the present one. He farmed and kept an orchard here until his death in 1840, and his son and grandson continued the orchard until 1916. The house has brick end chimneys, moulded cornices and returns on the gable ends, heavy stone lintels, and a central door with leaded glass sidelights. Later nineteenth century additions have been made, but much original character remains. Once surrounded by orchards, it now sits among twentieth century tract housing, and it is considered the city's most substantial colonial style stone house.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Builder: Judge William Bailey","architectural_style":"Colonial style stone house; early 19th century residential architecture","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and still in residential use; no threats to the building are known.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.643049-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001098.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001098/4a9387e36f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001098/4a9387e36f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ymblanter","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Bailey_House_Plattsburg.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ymblanter</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Bailey_House_Plattsburg.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312301","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Bailey_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8004936"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/clinton-county/bailey-william-house-82001098/"}
