It combines Italianate and Second Empire elements, notably mansard roofs over its two-story bays. It is also one of the few intact homes remaining in an area once full of such houses. Significance is rated local.","narrative":"Built around 1878, this two-story house at 693 South Second Street in San Jose is a Victorian Italianate residence with a slightly hipped roof, wide clapboard siding, a boxed cornice and bracketed eaves trimmed with dentils. Segmental arch windows and a full-pediment entry porch add to its character. Slanted two-story bays on three elevations are capped by metal-covered mansard roofs, a Second Empire feature that makes the design unusual. The lot also holds a two-story barn and a gazebo that appears to be recent. Lyman and Oscar D. Ross, a father and son who were local fruit dealers, first occupied the house. A local surgeon, William E. Keith, and his wife owned it from 1900 to 1931. It later served as a Volunteers of America hospitality house and then as apartments. It was listed as one of downtown San Jose's best Italianate homes and one of the few intact examples left in its area, at the local level of significance.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate, with Second Empire elements (Victorian period)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as being rehabilitated at the time of nomination, to be used as offices and a studio; condition checked as good and unaltered, and the form lists it as occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:28.272795-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/82000992.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82000992/17ffbe0f17-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82000992/17ffbe0f17-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Eugene Zelenko","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USA-San_Jose-Ross_House-2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Eugene Zelenko</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USA-San_Jose-Ross_House-2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861778","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_House_(San_Jose,_California)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55757582"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/santa-clara-county/ross-house-82000992/"}
