It is also considered a well-preserved example of late-nineteenth century vernacular residential architecture.","narrative":"This two-story wood frame house at 714 Buchon Street in San Luis Obispo was built around 1880. It is roughly cruciform in plan, with an intersecting gable roof and jerkinhead gable ends. The exterior is horizontal redwood shiplap siding, and Eastlake touches include quarter sunbursts, window surrounds and vertical boarding in the gables. Inside, the three largest rooms on each floor form a tee, and most floors are Douglas fir. The house matters chiefly for Myron Angel, who lived there from 1889 until his death in 1911. Born in New York in 1827, Angel came to California in 1849, worked in mining and ranching, and became a newspaper editor and historian who wrote histories of Nevada, Placer County and San Luis Obispo County. He also lobbied the legislature for a school teaching practical skills, and the state's first polytechnic institute was placed in San Luis Obispo largely through his efforts.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular residential with some Eastlake details","criteria":["B"],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; condition listed as good, with some alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:28.055679-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/82000988.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82000988/0eb74c984a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82000988/0eb74c984a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"KristenTinsley","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Angel_1.0.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">KristenTinsley</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Angel_1.0.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861441","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myron_Angel_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14683454"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-luis-obispo-county/angel-myron-house-82000988/"}
