It was designed by Chicago architect Henry Ives Cobb.","why_significant":"The depot is a fine example of Richardsonian Romanesque design and the work of Chicago architect Henry Ives Cobb. It also played an important role in the local economy, as a larger station was needed for visitors arriving by train to the Keeley Gold Cure in Dwight. It is one of the few surviving 1890s railroad stations on the Chicago to St. Louis line.","narrative":"Dwight's railroad depot on East Street was built in 1891 to designs by Chicago architect Henry Ives Cobb, who also designed early University of Chicago buildings and the Newberry Library. The 75-by-25-foot station is Richardsonian Romanesque in style, with Bedford blue stone walls from Indiana, a Joliet stone foundation, twin gables carved with the town name, and quatrefoil ornaments. Inside, the original oak finish, two waiting rooms and fireplaces served travelers. A larger station was needed after the Keeley Gold Cure drew hundreds of patients to Dwight by train, replacing an 1854 frame depot. Visitors over the years included William Jennings Bryan and Theodore Roosevelt. The interior was remodeled in 1946 and the slate roof replaced. Passenger service ended in 1971, and the building became office and storage space for the railroad. It is valued as a fine example of 1890s station architecture and for its role in the local economy.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Henry Ives Cobb","architectural_style":"Richardsonian Romanesque","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Last train stopped in May 1971; used as office and storage space by the railroad, in fair condition with neglected maintenance, broken windows and a need for a new roof.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.174176-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/63/8934/28893463/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/82000398.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82000398/77d6e42e23-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82000398/77d6e42e23-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"IvoShandor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dwight_Il_Dwight_Chicago_and_Alton_Railroad_Depot3.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">IvoShandor</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dwight_Il_Dwight_Chicago_and_Alton_Railroad_Depot3.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893463","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwight_station_(Chicago_and_Alton_Railroad)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5318100"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/livingston-county/dwight-chicago-and-alton-railroad-depot-82000398/"}
