Michigan Avenue and the 1400 block of S. Indiana Avenue in Chicago, ranging from three to nineteen stories, on a site used by St. Luke's Hospital since 1871.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the complex is Chicago's intact ensemble of early twentieth-century hospital buildings. It charts the shift from charity-based to broadly public hospital care and reflects the philanthropy of leading Chicago families. It also shows the work of major Chicago architectural firms and the adaptation of hotel and skyscraper models to hospital design.","narrative":"Eight red brick buildings with sandstone and limestone details make up this hospital complex on the block south of 14th Street between Michigan and Indiana Avenues in Chicago. St. Luke's Hospital began in 1864 as a charity of Grace Episcopal Church and has occupied the site since 1871. The surviving buildings date mainly from 1908 to 1949 and include the six-story George Smith Memorial Building for private patients, a nineteen-story Main Building completed in 1925, a small Gothic-style church, a nurses' home and a clinic wing. The Main Building applied skyscraper design to hospital use, raising capacity from 400 to 600 beds on the same land and taking advantage of views toward the lakefront civic monuments. Together the buildings record the move from charity hospitals to care open to all classes, the giving of wealthy Prairie Avenue families, and the work of leading Chicago architects. Several later or altered buildings are treated as non-contributing. The complex was vacant when documented.","period_of_significance":"1900-1950","architect_builder":"Various; Frost & Granger, Tallmadge & Watson, and Schmidt, Garden & Erickson are named as architectural firms; Charles S. Frost is named for the Main Building; Treat & Foltz designed the earlier 1880s pavilions.","architectural_style":"Free adaptation of Renaissance motifs (Smith Building); classical skyscraper design (Main Building); free adaptation of French and English Gothic (Grace Episcopal Church)","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant and unoccupied, with work in progress as a residential conversion as of August 1982; condition fair, and the Schweppe Nurses Home interior has suffered vandalism.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:34.587105-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/8924/28892476/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/82000392.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82000392/58c3c3d8ec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82000392/58c3c3d8ec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Andrew Jameson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Luke%27s_Hospital_Complex_B_Chicago_IL.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrew Jameson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Luke%27s_Hospital_Complex_B_Chicago_IL.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892476","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Luke%27s_Hospital_Complex_(Chicago)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7589802"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/st-lukes-hospital-complex-82000392/"}
