Built in 1853 to plans by L.A. Shumaker, it replaced an earlier wood-frame courthouse of 1782 and was the third to serve the county. The west facade has a pedimented portico with Doric columns, said in building records to follow the Campbell County Courthouse. A two-stage cupola holds a clock and bell. Inside, the courtroom has elaborate Italianate plasterwork, including a paneled ceiling and large circular medallion. The building was enlarged in 1898, 1917 and 1968. It was listed because it reflects the shift in Virginia courthouse design from Jeffersonian Roman Revival and Greek Revival toward Italianate forms, and because it still serves as the county's main records depository and court forum. The nominated half acre also includes a Civil War monument.","period_of_significance":"1853","architect_builder":"L. A.
