It became the nucleus of the area's turn-of-the-century commercial development. It retains much of its original character and fabric after a 1976 restoration.","narrative":"Yorktown Heights Railroad Station is a small one-story depot on Commerce Street in northern Westchester County, New York. It was standing by 1886 and may have been built as early as 1877 on the line that became the New York Central's Putnam Division. Board-and-batten and clapboard sheathing, a shingled hipped roof, bracketed canopies and half-timber effects give it a vernacular, picturesque character. It is one of only three surviving Putnam Division stations in the county. The railroad drew stores, hotels and a rail yard to the surrounding area, and the station became the center of the community's commercial growth. Passenger service ended in 1958 and freight in 1962. After a period of private use and vacancy, the town bought the building in 1966. A 1976 restoration returned it to near-original appearance, including oak panelling and hardwood floors, and it now serves as a museum and Chamber of Commerce office.","period_of_significance":"1877-1886","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular (picturesque rural railroad station architecture)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by the Town of Yorktown, restored in 1976 and used as a museum and Chamber of Commerce office; condition listed as good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.453441-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/81000419.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/81000419/1971b93d8a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/81000419/1971b93d8a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Yorktown_Heights,_NY,_train_station.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Yorktown_Heights,_NY,_train_station.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323318","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yorktown_Heights_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8055801"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/yorktown-heights-railroad-station-81000419/"}
