The original house dates to the third quarter of the eighteenth century and was built by the Van Cortlandt family; it has since been enlarged.","why_significant":"The house was built or remodeled in 1773 by Pierre Van Cortlandt, a member of the landowning family that held the 86,213-acre Manor of Cortlandt. It served as a refuge for the family during the American Revolution. It is also one of the few mid-nineteenth century country estates established in this part of the county, and it keeps many period features despite later additions.","narrative":"Set back about 250 feet from Oregon Road in Cortlandt, this five-bay brick house with two and one-half stories began in the third quarter of the eighteenth century as a residence of the Van Cortlandt family. Records suggest a smaller building stood on the site in 1756, and the house was built or remodeled in 1773 by Pierre Van Cortlandt. The family held the 86,213-acre Manor of Cortlandt, and during the American Revolution they used this upper manor as a refuge from their riverside house at Croton. Pierre returned after 1783, repaired the war-damaged house, and lived there until 1848. A New York businessman bought the estate in 1850 and remodeled it, adding decorative elements and a service wing. Later it became a convalescent home and then a nursing home, gaining additions in the 1920s and 1950s. The original house keeps its room plan, staircase, marble fireplaces and nineteenth-century porch and trim. The town acquired it in 1979.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799, 1800-1899 (specific dates circa 1770's)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as vacant and in fair condition, owned by the Town of Cortlandt; it is to be used as the town hall.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.114469-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/81000417.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/81000417/1c5ad05b17-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/81000417/1c5ad05b17-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"WindingRoad","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Van_Cortlandt_Upper_Manor_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">WindingRoad</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Van_Cortlandt_Upper_Manor_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323281","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Cortlandt_Upper_Manor_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7913254"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/van-cortlandt-upper-manor-house-81000417/"}
