It was rebuilt around 1860 on the site of a c. 1710 mill.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is locally significant as the only remaining grist mill in Yarmouth and the only known turbine-powered mill on Cape Cod. It has played a continuous role in Yarmouth's developing economy. It is listed under criterion A.","narrative":"Beside Route 28 in West Yarmouth, a small shingled grist mill sits at the edge of Mill Pond, with Mill Creek running beside it toward the ocean. The building is 20 feet square, two stories tall, and topped by a low hip roof. A mill has stood here since about 1710, when John and Shubel Baxter built one with an outside waterwheel. The Baxters were a prominent local family and large landowners, and Shubel also served as a judge and representative. Around 1860 the mill was rebuilt and fitted with an interior iron turbine, partly because low pond levels and winter freezing damaged wooden outside wheels. It is described as the only turbine-powered mill on Cape Cod and the only remaining grist mill in Yarmouth. Grinding stopped after about forty more years of Baxter family ownership. In 1961 A. Harold Castongay and George Kelley restored it, using replica tools and a duplicate turbine, and donated it to the town as a museum.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"John and Shubel Baxter (first mill, c. 1710); restoration in 1961 by A.
