It is associated with George I. Briggs, a leading figure in the creation and early government of the town of Bourne. It also holds the only surviving stenciled ceiling by marine artist George Sidney Raleigh in the town.","narrative":"This 2-1/2 story wood frame house on Sandwich Road in Bourne began around 1800 as a 1-1/2 story Cape-style cottage, believed built by Josephus Keene. About 1830 his son Moses Keene II, a carpenter, raised the roof, added an east ell and gave it Greek Revival detailing. The paneled corner pilasters and entry frame appear to follow plates in Asher Benjamin's The Practical House Carpenter, a copy of which remains in the house. A rear ell was added about 1880. George I. Briggs, Moses Keene's son-in-law, lived here. He helped incorporate Bourne in 1884, served as first chairman of the school committee, and was a selectman from 1893 to 1905. Marine artist George Sidney Raleigh, a neighbor, stenciled a ceiling mural in the music room, the only Raleigh ceiling known to survive in town. The house is owned by the Town of Bourne and is listed as unoccupied.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Moses Keene II (ca. 1830)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival (vernacular)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as unoccupied and owned by the Town of Bourne; the form describes the building as altered but on its original site.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.930404-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/68/7939/63793968/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/81000119.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/81000119/ee8765b3b1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/81000119/ee8765b3b1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Briggs_House,_Bourne,_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Briggs_House,_Bourne,_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793968","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_I._Briggs_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5540910"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/briggs-george-i-house-81000119/"}
