A one-story Federal house from the early 19th century was joined by a two-story Italianate block added after the Civil War.","why_significant":"The house is tied to the locally prominent McRae family, especially Peter McRae (1829-1907), a local and state political leader who helped push for the creation of Scotland County. The Federal and Italianate blocks are among the best preserved examples of their types in the county. Their combination in one complex gives the house particular importance.","narrative":"This rural frame farm complex near Johns, in Scotland County, North Carolina, consists of three blocks linked by one-story passageways. The oldest part is a one-story Federal house built in the first quarter of the 19th century for Peter McRae on land he acquired in 1791. His grandson and namesake, Peter McRae (1829-1907), inherited the homeplace in 1862 and later added a two-story Italianate block in front, with brackets and a two-tier pedimented porch. The younger McRae served in the legislature and as county board chairman, and as a state senator he backed the effort to create Scotland County. From 1904 the house was home to farm manager Laurin McQueen and his family until 1962. His daughter bought it in 1967 and restored the house and a ten-acre tract, including a mule barn and a former gin and pack house. It is regarded as one of the best preserved houses of its kind in the county.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal and Italianate (vernacular frame)","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Restored in 1967 as a single-family residence; described as occupied and in excellent condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.817308-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/47/7222/47722247/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/80004469.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004469/de9e6d3ac4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004469/de9e6d3ac4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Donovan Matthews","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:McRae-McQueen_House_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Donovan Matthews</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:McRae-McQueen_House_1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722247","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McRae-McQueen_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19946163"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/scotland-county/mcrae-mcqueen-house-80004469/"}
