Felton's cotton production encouraged settlement and helped establish the region's agricultural system. His donation of railroad right-of-way helped make Marshallville the community center of the area.","narrative":"Billy Place is a farmhouse built in 1830 on the old stage road between Lanier and Perry, near Marshallville in Macon County, Georgia. William \"Billy\" Felton, who came from Gates County, North Carolina, in 1820, built it. The house is plantation plain in style with a two-story Greek Revival portico, original siding, brick chimneys, and four rooms on each floor around a central hall. Its ceilings are eleven feet high, and its joists are pegged together. A kitchen wing was added in 1910 after the detached kitchen burned, and bathrooms and electricity followed in 1938. The property served as a residence, farm, and stage stop, and the farm remains in use with barns and sheds. Felton's cotton production encouraged settlement and helped shape the regional farming system. In the 1850s he donated land for a railroad right-of-way, which helped make Marshallville the center of the community. Six generations of the Felton family have owned the property.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Billy Felton","architectural_style":"Plantation plain style with Greek Revival portico","criteria":[],"status_note":"Excellent condition; the farm is still in use and the house is a residence for the farm superintendent.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.675788-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/80004444.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206340","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Place","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16254751"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/macon-county/billy-place-80004444/"}
