It was designed by Lynchburg's most prominent architectural firm of the time. It also reflects the national interest in zoological gardens and municipal zoos in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.","narrative":"Set in Miller Park in Lynchburg, this multi-sided wood-frame building was opened in 1902 as an aviary and animal exhibition house. It was a gift to the city from Randolph Guggenheimer, a Lynchburg native who had become a lawyer and real estate speculator in New York City. The local firm of Frye and Chesterman designed it in an adapted Queen Anne style, with imbricated shingles, a conical metal roof, a clerestory, a monitor and sixteen round-arch windows. Its main entrance has a Colonial Revival doorway. Originally it held seven cages of monkeys, alligators, cockatoos, doves, parrots and canaries. As interest in exotic animals faded, it became a branch library in 1931 and city parks offices in 1971. Since 1975 it has served as a garden center. It is regarded as the earliest known municipal aviary in Virginia and as a local example of the national zoo-building movement.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Frye & Chesterman","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Excellent condition, altered, and occupied; leased since 1975 to the Lynchburg Council of Garden Clubs, which maintains it as a garden center.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.57488-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/65/6817/41681765/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/80004309.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004309/f5731408e8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004309/f5731408e8-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aviary_Lynchburg_Nov_08-1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aviary_Lynchburg_Nov_08-1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681765","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviary_(Lynchburg,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4828589"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/lynchburg/aviary-80004309/"}
