It was established about 1810 by Nathan Kelsey, Jr. and includes a farmhouse, two barns and 79 acres.","why_significant":"The farm is described as a remarkably intact early nineteenth century complex and a fine example of Federal period rural vernacular architecture. It keeps a high degree of integrity of design, materials and workmanship. It survives in its original setting despite land-use pressures near Syracuse, and reflects the life of central New York's earliest agrarian settlers.","narrative":"Four miles northeast of Skaneateles, this farm sits on the north side of the Old Seneca Turnpike, once an important route to western New York. Nathan Kelsey, Jr. (1762-1844), an early settler of the area then called West Hill, established it about 1810. The nominated property covers 79 acres of the original farm and includes a one-and-one-half-story timber-framed farmhouse with weatherboard siding, an attached shop and woodshed, a privy, and two frame barns built around 1860. Inside, the house keeps its original plan, wide plank wainscoting, beaded moldings, four-panel doors and corner fireplace mantels. The farm was listed for its architecture and its role in the settlement of the region. Its simple, well-crafted buildings show the skill of rural artisans in the early nineteenth century, and the complex has survived intact despite development pressure around Syracuse. Only three families have owned it: the Kelseys, the Bisbees and, from 1853, the Davey family.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal period rural vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied; condition rated excellent to good, with the farmhouse retaining its original layout and historic fabric to a remarkable degree.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.279688-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80004277.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004277/41f0f3edfd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004277/41f0f3edfd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kelsey-Davey_Farm.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kelsey-Davey_Farm.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320378","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelsey%E2%80%93Davey_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6386468"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/kelsey-davey-farm-80004277/"}
