The two-story brick house was built in the late eighteenth century and enlarged in 1835.","why_significant":"The nomination presents Norwood as one of the principal historic plantations of the Upper James region. Its brick manor house blends eighteenth- and nineteenth-century forms, with fine brickwork and elaborate provincial Adam-style mantels. A rare group of mid-nineteenth-century brick farm buildings adds to the picture of antebellum rural life.","narrative":"Norwood is a brick plantation house on the south bank of the Upper James River in Powhatan County, Virginia. John Harris, Jr., a member of the Cumberland County Committee of Safety in 1775-76, built the original five-bay, single-pile core sometime after 1770. Harry Heth bought the property in 1812, and the house was enlarged and remodeled in 1835 with two-story flanking wings and an extension of the north front. The even Flemish bond brickwork was carried through the additions, so the whole reads as one composition. Inside, the parlor, dining room and a west-wing bedroom have elaborate provincial Adam-style mantels with fluted paterae and carved pineapples. The grounds include an informally landscaped park, an office, a deteriorated kitchen, and a stable, barn and long shed from the antebellum period. The property matters for its architecture, its harmonious blend of two centuries of building, and its role as one of the principal plantations of the Upper James.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"John Harris, Jr. built the original portion of the house sometime after 1770","architectural_style":"Provincial Adam-style detailing; late Georgian design","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition, occupied as a private residence; the plantation kitchen is much deteriorated and farming activity is reduced to a minimum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.697851-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/22/6826/41682622/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/80004212.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004212/3d0f6dd6bf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004212/3d0f6dd6bf-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Norwood,_State_Route_711_vicinity,_Wyndham_vicinity_(Powhatan_County,_Virginia).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Norwood,_State_Route_711_vicinity,_Wyndham_vicinity_(Powhatan_County,_Virginia).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682622","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwood_(Powhatan,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15262604"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/powhatan-county/norwood-80004212/"}
