It has a frame farmhouse built in sections from the early nineteenth century to about 1910 and twenty log and frame outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination calls Berry Hill a remarkably complete Southside Virginia plantation complex with an unusually high number of outbuildings. The house grew over about a century from a Federal farmhouse into a complex of wings, chimneys, porches and roofs. It reflects nine generations of occupancy by one family line, and few Virginia farmsteads compare in complexity.","narrative":"Berry Hill is a farm complex near the North Carolina line in southwestern Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Its main house was built in stages. The original section is a two-story, three-bay frame block joined by a hyphen to a story-and-a-half wing. A mid-nineteenth-century single-cell wing was added to the west. A large two-story addition with a gambrel roof followed around 1910. Interiors include marbleized Federal and Greek Revival mantels and a Colonial Revival living hall. Around the house stand twenty log and frame outbuildings, including a kitchen/laundry, smokehouse, dairy, slave house, cribs and a stable. A walled garden with a gazebo and a family cemetery lie to the west. Land here passed from the Perkins family through Wilson, Hairston and Sims descendants, and the property was known as Berry Hill by 1812. The nominated 81 acres cover the house, yard, gardens, cemetery and the significant early outbuildings.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal farmhouse with Greek Revival, Shingle style and Colonial Revival elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence and agricultural property; one outbuilding is described as dilapidated and a stone springhouse is in ruins.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:58.010159-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/46/6825/41682546/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/80004210.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004210/02dfad9928-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004210/02dfad9928-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Frances Benjamin Johnston","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Berry_Hill_plantation_Pittsylvania_County_Virginia_by_Frances_Benjamin_Johnston.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Frances Benjamin Johnston</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Berry_Hill_plantation_Pittsylvania_County_Virginia_by_Frances_Benjamin_Johnston.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682546","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berry_Hill_(Berry_Hill,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15198625"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/pittsylvania-county/berry-hill-80004210/"}
