The estate is also significant for the prominent people who lived there, and it reflects the late eighteenth-century move of Tidewater families to northern and western Virginia.","narrative":"Belmont is a Federal-style brick mansion set in a landscaped park on a ridge above the Potomac Valley, north of Ashburn in Loudoun County. Ludwell Lee, son of Declaration of Independence signer Richard Henry Lee, had it built between 1799 and 1802 on land that came to him through his first wife. Its five-part plan has a two-story center block with a pedimented pavilion, a Palladian window, a large fanlight and a fluted Doric portico, flanked by hyphens and wings. Flemish bond brickwork and Adam-style mantels mark the interior and exterior. The designer and builders are unknown. A 1907 remodeling by Pittsburgh architect T. Kent Roberts enlarged the rear wing and altered the end wings. Later owners included a school operator, a Kansas governor, Evelyn Walsh McLean of Hope Diamond fame, and Patrick J. Hurley, a Secretary of War. The nominated tract preserves the curving tree-lined drive, a family cemetery, and a stone smokehouse.","period_of_significance":"1799-1802","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal (five-part plan)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in a good state of preservation and essentially unchanged apart from a 1907 remodeling; the form checks the status as unoccupied.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.873847-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/6816/41681619/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/80004198.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004198/3c539859f9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004198/3c539859f9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BELMONT_MANOR_HOUSE,_LOUDOUN_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681619","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belmont_Manor_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4884390"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/loudoun-county/belmont-80004198/"}
