It reflects the architectural taste of the locally prominent Howerton family. It has remained in the family, with its 19th-century furnishings, papers and landscaping largely intact.","narrative":"Seaton is a wood-frame Gothic Revival house on about 12 acres north of South Boston in Halifax County, Virginia. Josiah Dabbs, a Halifax master-carpenter, built it in 1856-57 for William Matthew Howerton, son of the tobacco manufacturer Philip Howerton. In 1887 a 2½-story addition and a kitchen wing were added, along with a carriage shed. Exterior features include ornamental bargeboards, a battlemented porch with open-pointed arches, and roof cresting. The interior keeps its central-hall plan, open-well stair, pine floors, plaster walls and an ornate Moorish-style parlor screen. Furnishings gathered in the 19th century are arranged as in a late 19th-century photograph, and a circa 1830 pipe organ was installed in the house. Family papers, carpeting and curtains survive. The grounds retain boxwood paths and period plantings, plus several 19th-century outbuildings. The property was listed as an unusually intact regional example of Gothic Revival design, remaining in the original family.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific dates 1856-57, 1887)","architect_builder":"Josiah Dabbs","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in a remarkable state of preservation; the form marks it occupied and a private residence, and it remains in the original owner's family.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.831811-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/58/6810/41681058/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/80004193.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004193/91a560e37d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004193/91a560e37d-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seaton_estate_from_501.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seaton_estate_from_501.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681058","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seaton_(South_Boston,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713184"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/halifax-county/seaton-80004193/"}
