It was built with Spindletop oil money and was the home of State Senator Robert Lee Warren. It was also designed by Flanders, a prominent North Texas architect.","narrative":"Built in 1903-04 at 705 Griffith Avenue in Terrell, this two-story brick house with a red tile hipped roof blends Colonial Revival and Prairie School styles. Robert Warren, later a Texas state senator, and his wife Annie built it after oil was discovered on her family's farm near Beaumont, so Spindletop money paid for the home. Dallas architect James Edward Flanders designed it. The front has a two-story portico with paired Roman Ionic columns and a doorway of beveled leaded glass in a Prairie manner. Inside, stencilled friezes in six major rooms are among the most notable of their period in Texas. They include Arts and Crafts patterns in the halls and two rooms, and a rare Art Nouveau frieze in the dining room. Tiffany-like stained glass, Prairie-style cabinets and mantel, and original light fixtures and plumbing survive. Only three owners have kept changes to a minimum, which explains the house's unusually intact interior.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"James Edward Flanders","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival-Prairie School","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; condition listed as good, with some alterations such as a greenhouse addition and partly enclosed porch.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.151365-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/40/9727/40972740/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/80004137.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004137/17591b8af4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004137/17591b8af4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WarrenCrowellHouse1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WarrenCrowellHouse1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972740","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren-Crowell_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q48810525"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/kaufman-county/warren-crowell-house-80004137/"}
