Haden by the builders Martin and Krause.","why_significant":"It is described as an exceptionally well-developed and carefully preserved example of Eastlake architecture, with elaborate gingerbread woodwork inside and out. It still holds most of the original Haden family furnishings, giving an unusual picture of Victorian taste. It also reflects the standing of Haden, a prominent Ladonia merchant.","narrative":"Built in 1894 for Ladonia merchant J.B. Haden, this two-story cypress house on West Bonham Street is a richly detailed example of Eastlake architecture. Local builders Martin and Krause, of German background, produced its gingerbread woodwork, which includes fish-scale shingles, spindles, brackets and carved bargeboards. An off-center tower, intersecting gables, a small balcony and a wraparound porch give the exterior an irregular, lively profile. Inside, the pine woodwork remains unpainted, and a carved staircase, a tracery valance and mirrored fireplaces stand out. Most of the Haden family's original Eastlake furnishings remain, many dating to the 1890s household. Haden came to Ladonia in 1869, opened a general store and wrote a local news column. His son Maurice lived in the house until 1963. Later owners made few changes beyond restoring the woodwork and painting the exterior yellow with white trim. The house was listed as an outstanding, well-preserved Victorian showplace and still serves as a family home.","period_of_significance":"1894","architect_builder":"Martin and Krause","architectural_style":"Eastlake (Victorian)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, occupied and used as a private residence, needing only minor cosmetic work.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.651066-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/16/9719/40971916/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/80004118.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004118/4edc36ff3a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004118/4edc36ff3a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dianna Markham","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Haden_House,_Ladonia,_Texas.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Dianna Markham</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Haden_House,_Ladonia,_Texas.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971916","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haden_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q109699897"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/fannin-county/haden-house-80004118/"}
