The style flourished in the Northeast but never took hold in Texas, where Midwestern influence prevailed. The house shows the style's typical shingle cladding, broad front gable, Palladian window, bay window and veranda.","narrative":"Built in 1904 in Dallas's Oak Lawn area, this large shingle-clad house at 3506 Cedar Springs was commissioned by John Hickman Miller as a wedding present for his wife, Katherine Melone. It has more than 6,000 square feet, a brick basement unusual for Dallas, a broad front gable, a Palladian window, a dining room bay window and a veranda that extends to form a porte cochere. The architect is unknown, and a period pattern book may have inspired the design. The house is considered the only known Shingle Style building still standing in Dallas and one of a handful left in Texas, where the style never flourished. Mrs. Miller lived there until 1969, and the house later served as a dance studio and theater. Vandalism stripped its leaded glass and some interior woodwork, and it was once slated for demolition. A new owner planned restoration, guided by a recently found period photograph.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Unknown (built by John Hickman Miller)","architectural_style":"Shingle Style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Marked unoccupied and in fair condition; vandalized over the prior decade, with leaded glass, mantelpiece and parlor molding removed.
