It is the most prominent surviving Victorian building in Era. It was also the home of Judge Robert Ewing Thomason, a legislator and jurist.","narrative":"Built in 1894 in the village of Era, Cooke County, this one-story frame cottage reflects late Victorian design with Queen Anne and Eastlake detailing. Builder George Brumbaugh constructed it for Dr. Benjamin Richard Thomason, the first physician in that part of the county, and his wife Mary. It served as both family home and doctor's office. Exterior features include a hip roof with gables, fishscale shingles, turned porch posts with fan-like brackets, and a Chinese Chippendale balustrade unusual for the area. Inside are sliding wood doors, period mantelpieces, and a raised medicine chest for the doctor's supplies. Porch infill and the removal of the chimneys in 1948 are the main alterations, and they appear reversible. The house is the most prominent Victorian building left in Era. It was also the boyhood home of Robert Ewing Thomason, who became Speaker of the Texas House, mayor of El Paso, a U.S. congressman, and a federal judge. A smokehouse and barn also survive on the property.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"George Brumbaugh","architectural_style":"Late Victorian cottage with Queen Anne/Eastlake detailing","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, occupied as a private residence, with minor additions and a restoration/renovation under way; the smokehouse and barn survive as outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.758991-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/87/9715/40971587/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/80004086.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004086/3a1d9f0f76-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80004086/3a1d9f0f76-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomason-Scott_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomason-Scott_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971587","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110000092"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/cooke-county/thomason-scott-house-80004086/"}
