It stands on a mountain peak at 2,190 feet above sea level, the greatest altitude among Pennsylvania courthouses, and is visible from all directions. Its interior features a grand staircase, marble, bronze and walnut finishes, and a stained-glass dome.","narrative":"Built in 1904-06 by Caldwell and Drake of Columbus, Indiana, from plans by J.C. Fulton of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, the Somerset County Courthouse is a two-story Classical Renaissance Revival building of Indiana limestone on a native sandstone foundation. Its copper dome, modeled on St. Paul's Cathedral in London, rises from a central tower with four clocks. A semicircular portico with unfluted Corinthian columns dominates the south face. Inside, a central open staircase with walnut railings and cast steel balusters rises to a stained-glass dome supported by twelve marble-paneled columns. The courthouse is the third on a site deeded by Adam Schneider in 1795, and its elevated position on a mountain peak made it a prominent landmark in Somerset and the surrounding Alleghenies.","period_of_significance":"1904-1906","architect_builder":"J.C.
