It also served as a Civil War memorial to Pickaway County soldiers and as a long-time center of community activity, housing the public library, an armory and a civic auditorium.","narrative":"Memorial Hall is a brick civic building on a corner lot at 165 E. Main Street in Circleville, completed in 1891 near the edge of the central business district. It rises three and a half stories above a rock-faced stone foundation and shows the Richardsonian Romanesque style through its massive scale, round arches, ribbon windows, paired columns and towers, including a round conical-roofed tower and a square crenellated one. Funding came from a countywide property tax levy approved by voters in 1890 and from the City of Circleville, which required that the library and armory be housed inside. The building honors Pickaway County residents who served in the Civil War. Its first floor has held the public library, while the second-floor auditorium long served as the city's largest meeting space for dances, political and civic meetings, carnivals and amateur theatricals. Original interior woodwork and a pressed tin ceiling survive, and the exterior remains largely unchanged.","period_of_significance":"1891","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Richardsonian Romanesque","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in good condition; the first floor houses the public library and the auditorium is used by a local theatre group.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.792618-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003211.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003211/6a41eb65f9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003211/6a41eb65f9-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Memorial_Hall,_Circleville.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Memorial_Hall,_Circleville.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990913","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circleville_Memorial_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716389"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/pickaway-county/memorial-hall-80003211/"}
