He built the house to reflect his standing as his tobacco packing and shipping business grew. It also reflects the importance of tobacco farming in Ohio after the Civil War.","narrative":"Built around 1870 on a steep hillside above State Route 146 east of Sarahsville, this 2½-story balloon frame house measures 27 by 42 feet and is sheathed in beveled siding. The five-bay facade has a centered doorway with a transom, sidelights and plain pilasters, and the central hall holds an open-string stair with a walnut balustrade. An original two-level portico was removed after World War I and replaced with a simple porch. Henry Young, a tobacco farmer, packer and shipper who helped organize the local United Brethren church, hired Senecaville builder Tobias Shaw to construct it. Shaw's son Manual helped build the house and married Young's daughter Caroline, and their descendants have owned it since. The property includes tobacco barns, a corncrib, a smokehouse and a stone quarry that supplied the foundation and fireplaces. It was listed for its link to Young and to the tobacco industry that flourished in Noble and Monroe counties after the Civil War.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Tobias Shaw","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as unoccupied and vacant; the owners plan to restore the windows, siding, front door, and eventually the portico and picket fence.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.762214-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003203.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003203/b809be8f35-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003203/b809be8f35-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Bwsmith84 (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Young_Shaw_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bwsmith84 (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Young_Shaw_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990787","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young-Shaw_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8057841"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/noble-county/young-shaw-house-80003203/"}
