It is also an example of the large landholder/developer settlement pattern typical of many Ohio frontier communities. The Caldwell family farm was also a major stock operation.","narrative":"Built in 1832 at the corner of East and Locust Streets in Caldwell, Ohio, this two-story brick house with a stone foundation has a gabled roof, boxed cornice and chimneys at each gable end. A two-story frame porch with brick posts shelters the facade, and the main door lintel is inscribed \"A.D. 1832.\" Inside, the original woodwork, ceiling height and central stairway survive. The house was the home of Samuel Caldwell, whose father Robert surveyed the area and settled the site in 1809. Samuel farmed on a large scale and owned a sawmill and a grist mill by 1836. In the early 1850s he offered land to the county for a county seat, and the site was chosen in 1857. The town was named in his honor and is now the largest urban center in Noble County. The property also illustrates the pattern of large landholders developing frontier Ohio towns. The farm stayed in the family until the 1920s.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition, largely unaltered, on its original site.
