Vernon Redding was the architect and Hawkins Construction Co. the contractor.","why_significant":"The nomination argues architectural significance for Zanesville, calling it the finest of only three Art Deco buildings in the city. It shows the style through setbacks, pier-and-spandrel offsets, geometric terra cotta trim and a corner tower. The interior uses glossy tile from local manufacturers, another hallmark of the style.","narrative":"Built in 1929 for the Ohio Power Company, this four-story building at 604 Main Street in Zanesville is a long, narrow structure of buff brick. Its entrance faces Sixth Street on the west side, and the ground floor is clad in smooth-dressed stone with large single-pane windows in plain metal frames. Upper stories step back in a series of setbacks and carry terra cotta trim, including banded pilaster-like ornament, bas-relief panels and curvilinear caps above the wall piers. A small tower at the southeast corner houses the top of the elevator shaft. Inside, much of the original decoration survives, including tiles from local art tile manufacturers. The building was designed by architect Vernon Redding and built by Hawkins Construction Co. It is considered the finest of only three Art Deco buildings in Zanesville. It was completed just as the company's interurban service ended, and it likely marked a new era for the utility. Ohio Power used it until the summer of 1979.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Vernon Redding, architect; Hawkins Construction Co., contractors","architectural_style":"Art Deco (early Modernistic)","criteria":[],"status_note":"The form lists the property as unoccupied and in excellent condition. Ohio Power occupied the building until summer 1979. Much of the interior is unaltered.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.088315-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003198.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003198/44c9a79b00-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003198/44c9a79b00-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Tristan Blatt","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ohio_Power_Company.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tristan Blatt</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ohio_Power_Company.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"07000025","name":"Muskingum River Navigation Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/muskingum-river-navigation-historic-district-07000025/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990652","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q125489914"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/muskingum-county/ohio-power-company-80003198/"}
