McClelland and designed by Charles Chilcote.","why_significant":"The house is nominated as a regional example of Georgian Revival architecture, with simple rectangular massing, classical ornament, a neo-Adamesque entry and a largely intact interior. Georgian Revival houses are scarce in Zanesville. It is also associated with McClelland, owner of the Zane Pottery, in a city known as an international art pottery center.","narrative":"Built in 1924 at 908 Laurel Avenue in Zanesville, this three-story brick house is an example of Colonial Revival, specifically Georgian Revival, design. It has a rectangular plan, a gently sloping gable roof, a gable dormer, semicircular lunettes in the gable ends, and a one-story Ionic portico sheltering a doorway with leaded glass sidelights and a neo-Adamesque fanlight. Inside, a broad central hall, an open-string stair with a stained glass window, classical pilasters and wood moldings survive largely as built. The house was designed by Charles Chilcote, a ceramic engineer who worked for Harry S. McClelland at the Zane Pottery Company and is not known to have designed another house. McClelland rose through the Peters and Reed Pottery and bought the business in 1920, and Zane Pottery became known for garden ware. Georgian Revival buildings are uncommon in Zanesville, which adds to the house's local importance.","period_of_significance":"1924","architect_builder":"Charles Chilcote, designer","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival (Georgian Revival)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, unaltered, on its original site, and occupied as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.916625-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003197.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003197/8914fd0911-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003197/8914fd0911-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Bwsmith84 (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harry_S_McClelland_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bwsmith84 (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harry_S_McClelland_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"07000025","name":"Muskingum River Navigation Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/muskingum-river-navigation-historic-district-07000025/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990695","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138645924"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/muskingum-county/mcclelland-harry-s-house-80003197/"}
