It is also significant as the long-standing center of county government. It was built during an oil-boom period of local prosperity.","narrative":"Rising above the village of Woodsfield, the Monroe County Courthouse is a square-plan Neo-Classical Revival building completed between 1905 and 1908. Cincinnati architects Samuel Hannaford and Sons designed it in red brick with yellow brick accents and Bedford sandstone for the foundation, engaged Ionic columns and trim. A copper dome crowns a central tower with four large clocks made by the Howard Clock Company of New York. Inside, a 20-by-20-foot stained glass skylight sits beneath the dome, and a 28-by-9-foot stained glass window with a large letter M lights the stairwell. Marble stairs and marbled oak woodwork complete the restrained interior. It is the fourth courthouse on the site, the earlier three having burned, and it was funded during a time of prosperity driven by nearby oil discoveries. Little has changed since construction, and it still serves as the seat of county government, which is the basis for its listing.","period_of_significance":"1905-1908","architect_builder":"Samuel Hannaford & Sons","architectural_style":"Neo-Classical Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Excellent condition, unaltered inside and out since construction, well maintained and still serving as the center of county government.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.272982-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003168.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003168/24fbb9c1f7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003168/24fbb9c1f7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Bwsmith84 (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Monroe_Courthouse_OH.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bwsmith84 (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Monroe_Courthouse_OH.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990360","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monroe_County_Courthouse_(Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6902158"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/monroe-county/monroe-county-courthouse-80003168/"}
