Most farmhouses of the era were frame or brick, and barns were almost all frame. An 1898 county atlas marked these as the only properties noted as stone.","narrative":"This farmstead northwest of Clarington in Monroe County, Ohio, centers on a stone house and a stone barn built by Frederick Kindleberger, a farmer and stone mason. The 1873 house is an H-shaped, 1½-story building of smooth-dressed ashlar sandstone, measuring 42 by 32 feet. Its roof was reworked around 1900, gaining gable ends and an extended monitor. The 1883 barn, about 200 feet downhill, measures 40 by 60 feet and is a bank barn of deeply rusticated dry-laid stone under a slate truncated hip roof, with segmental-arched doorways and dated keystones. More than a dozen small outbuildings of concrete block and wood frame surround them. The complex was recognized for its architecture because farmhouses and barns in the area were typically frame, and an 1898 county atlas marked these two as stone. Kindleberger's son William later became a known farmer and early advocate of soil and water conservation. The property remains in the family.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Frederick Kindleberger, builder","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition; the property remains in the family and is still farmed. The house roof was altered around 1900 and the rear porch inset was enclosed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.806474-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003163.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003163/4a244c86c9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003163/4a244c86c9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Bwsmith84","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kindleberger_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bwsmith84</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kindleberger_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990347","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Kindleberger_Stone_House_and_Barn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5498204"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/monroe-county/kindleberger-frederick-stone-house-and-barn-80003163/"}
