It is also significant as the home built and lived in by State Senator Thomas J. Godfrey.","narrative":"Built in 1876 on the west edge of Celina, this two-story brick house was designed by Dayton architect Luther Peters, who spent two years planning it before local builders spent two more constructing it. The bricks were made on the original ten acres of farmland. Its most unusual feature is its shape: each floor has three oblong octagonal rooms opening off a central hall. Five decorated gable ends, hood moulds with keystones, and a green Vermont slate roof mark the exterior. Inside, the original Italian marble fireplaces, white walnut shutters and woodwork of walnut, ash and pine survive unrefinished. The house was home to Thomas J. Godfrey, born in Darke County in 1831, who became Mercer County prosecuting attorney, served as State Senator and President Pro Tem of the Senate, and sat on the Ohio State University board of trustees for twenty-five years. It was listed for its architecture and its association with him.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Luther Peters, Dayton, Ohio","architectural_style":"Victorian Gothic","criteria":[],"status_note":"Marked occupied and used as a private residence; exterior unaltered except for replaced front and east porches; original slate roof, woodwork, furnace and marble fireplaces remain.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.169666-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003159.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003159/9a9bca5bbd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003159/9a9bca5bbd-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sen._Thomas_J._Godfrey_House,_Celina.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sen._Thomas_J._Godfrey_House,_Celina.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990265","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138587146"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/mercer-county/godfrey-sen-thomas-j-house-80003159/"}
