It is also an excellent surviving example of the late colonial vernacular building style brought to Ohio in the early 19th century, a survival of New England medieval-derived vernacular building with little Georgian or Federal ornament.","narrative":"Set on a sloping lot near Lake Milton in Mahoning County, Ohio, this two-story frame house measures about 40 by 32 feet and rests on a dry-laid stone foundation. Its mortise-and-tenon frame is covered in clapboard, and unusually it has a center entrance on both long sides. Daniel Vaughn settled on the property in 1807, on land owned by Simon Perkins, and was living in a finished frame house there by 1811. He acquired the land in 1819, and the family kept the property until 1871. Vaughn and his brother Johnson served as justices of the peace. The house reflects New England vernacular building carried into early Ohio, with little ornament beyond gable fanlights and door dentils. A 1915 dam created the lake near the house, and porches added in 1917 hid its original look until they were removed in 1979, when restoration began. It is valued as a rare survivor of Milton Township's earliest settlement.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Post-colonial (late colonial) vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restoration began in 1979 after the 1917 porches were removed; the house is listed as in good condition and used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.076004-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003145.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003145/d705a49e84-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003145/d705a49e84-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_Vaughn_Homestead.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_Vaughn_Homestead.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990100","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138562129"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/mahoning-county/vaughn-daniel-homestead-80003145/"}
