It is also an early stone tenant house built by Joseph Evans, who built other local buildings.","narrative":"Built in 1815, this small one-story cabin of rubble stone stands on the Denison University campus in Granville, Ohio. Joseph Evans, who also built the nearby Bancroft House and the Historical Society building on Broadway, constructed it using stone from the Rose Quarry at the base of the hill on the north campus. It first served as a tenant house for the Dustin farm, from 1815 to 1840. The building was deserted around 1890 and fell into ruin. Denison University bought it in 1917, though decay continued until a renovation in 1934 turned it into a dwelling with a shingled frame addition for a bath, bedroom and garage; a second bedroom followed in 1937. The cabin is best known as a station on the Underground Railroad from the 1830s to 1860. A dugout nearby, used for vegetable storage, sheltered runaway slaves on their way north to Mt. Vernon.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Joseph Evans (builder)","architectural_style":"Early vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Interior and exterior condition listed as good; used as a residence and owned by Denison University.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.312068-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003137.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003137/06d1828c4d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003137/06d1828c4d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Wdzinc","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dustin_Cabin_Granville_Ohio.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Wdzinc</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dustin_Cabin_Granville_Ohio.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985684","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138459806"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/licking-county/dustin-cabin-80003137/"}
