It argues the house reflects the continuity of village life through the 19th century and that the barn is a rare survival in the area.","narrative":"Set about 550 feet south of Main Street in a secluded, wooded part of Madison village, this house and barn date to around 1830. The 1-1/2-story house has a wood frame with plank construction, lap siding, a stone foundation and a gable roof with shingles. Its long facade has five bays and a recessed doorway with sidelights. Wide corner posts and a continuous frieze board reflect the original Greek Revival vernacular style, and much of the original interior woodwork survives. A gable dormer, bay window and ell were added at unknown dates. Behind the house stands an early barn with board-and-batten siding, stone stalls and hewn timbers. John Kellogg, who arrived in 1823, was a blacksmith, township officer and postmaster, and his shop stood close to Main Street, with the house built behind it. The property is valued as an example of village continuity through the 19th century and for the barn's rarity locally.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in excellent condition inside and outside and used as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.506473-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003123.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003123/59612a76ac-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003123/59612a76ac-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Kellogg_House_at_Madison.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Kellogg_House_at_Madison.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985632","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138447824"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lake-county/kellogg-john-house-and-barn-80003123/"}
