It is also tied to Francis Hendry, a musician and director of the Madison municipal band. Its 19th-century interior features add to its architectural interest.","narrative":"This two-and-a-half-story Italianate house at 239-243 West Main Street in Madison, Ohio, dates to about 1860. Its wood frame walls are clapboard, set on a coursed rubble stone foundation under a hip roof of standing-seam metal. The front has five bays, and the plan is ell-shaped. The most prominent features are the bracketed porches and a paneled frieze with bracketed eaves; at the east end, part of a porch was enclosed as a bay window. Inside, large double doors, a leaded glass window, a brick oven in the cellar, and square nails and wooden pegs in the framing and joinery reflect nineteenth-century construction. The house is known for Francis Hendry, a musician who directed the Madison municipal band, and it may have been built by Henry Hendry, a builder. When the property left the Hendry family in 1940, many banjos were found in the attic. A barn and old maple and walnut trees remain on the lot. It is considered one of the village's notable Italianate houses.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Possibly Henry Hendry, builder","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good interior and exterior condition and used as a residence; an addition and some alterations are noted, including a porch end enclosed as a bay window.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.404479-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003120.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003120/c941908a19-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003120/c941908a19-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LeeG7144","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:239-243_W_Main_St_2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LeeG7144</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:239-243_W_Main_St_2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985624","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138447676"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lake-county/hendry-francis-house-80003120/"}
