It is notable for its unusually fine Greek Revival doorway despite later additions and modern siding. The large, unaltered site is also considered significant.","narrative":"Built around 1840 on West Main Street in Madison, this 1-1/2-story wood frame house combines a Federal-style five-bay plan with a Greek Revival doorway that includes a transom, sidelights, a broken cornice and a paneled architrave. It is attributed to Addison Kimball, who is credited with several early homes in the town. A rear wing, said to be about 15 years older, originally stood south of its present spot on the lot and was moved in 1840 to join the main house. An east sun porch was added in 1927, and the original six-over-six windows survive. Aluminum siding now covers the walls. In the late 19th century the Dayton family, cattle dealers and shippers, lived here. The house is valued for its fine doorway and for its large, deep, largely unaltered lot at the edge of town, which remains almost rural in character.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1840","architect_builder":"Attributed to Addison Kimball","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a residence; interior and exterior condition listed as excellent.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.21168-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003114.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003114/d2f17754b4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003114/d2f17754b4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LeeG7144","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:939_W_Main_St.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LeeG7144</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:939_W_Main_St.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985586","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138430720"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lake-county/dayton-james-house-80003114/"}
