It combines Greek Revival massing, portico and interior decoration with a heavy Italianate entablature. It is also tied to local commerce through John Ickes, a savings and loan manager and bank president.","narrative":"Near the village of Adena in southern Jefferson County, Ohio, this brick farmhouse stands in coal-mining and farming country where most buildings are plain vernacular structures. It has two and a half stories, a tooled sandstone foundation, a five-bay facade and a centered one-story portico framing a Greek Revival door with transom and sidelights. A heavy Italianate entablature with brackets and a paneled frieze gives the house its transitional character. Inside, grained woodwork, double pocket doors and marbelized mantels and baseboards are the most striking features. Thomas Hamilton, a local contractor who bought the land in 1839, built the house, probably in the 1840s. He also served in the Civil War and helped found the Short Creek Presbyterian Church. The Ickes family owned the property from 1888 for 42 years; John Ickes managed a savings and loan and later led a bank in Adena. The house was judged the best example of its kind in the area. A brick milk house and two barns survive nearby.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Thomas Hamilton, builder","architectural_style":"Greek Revival-Italianate transitional","criteria":[],"status_note":"The supporting history says the original house stands empty, though the form's classification section marks it unoccupied; the rear porch is deteriorated.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.526662-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003106.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003106/1a8a0f555b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003106/1a8a0f555b-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"User:Roseohioresident","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hamilton-Ickes_House_2012-07-13.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Roseohioresident</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hamilton-Ickes_House_2012-07-13.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989472","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138378255"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/jefferson-county/hamilton-ickes-house-80003106/"}
