It served as a school for over sixty years and is now a museum. It is one of the county's oldest surviving schools and the only restored one-room schoolhouse museum in the county.","narrative":"Northwest of Berlin in Holmes County, Ohio, a one-room brick schoolhouse sits well back from a lightly travelled county road, surrounded by shade trees and lawn. Built in 1889, it replaced a frame school erected during the Civil War. The building has round-arched windows with carved stone keystones that give it an Italianate character, a gable roof with smaller side gables and datestones, and a rock-faced sandstone foundation with ornate iron grills. Inside is a single plain room with plaster walls, wide board floors, stove chimneys along the sides and old blackboards. Classes were held here until 1952, and forty-five teachers taught at the school between 1863 and 1952, the longest-serving being Floyd Boyd, whose ancestors homesteaded the land. After serving as a warehouse, the building was restored and now operates as a museum and a center for historical activities in eastern Holmes County. It is the only restored one-room schoolhouse museum in the county.","period_of_significance":"1889","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Operated as a museum by the Heritage Preservation Committee, Inc., furnished with period antiques; restoration was near completion at the time of the nomination.
