Designed by Samuel Hannaford and built in 1872-1873, it measures about 70 by 160 feet and originally seated 1,200. Its brick walls carry sandstone trim, corbeled brickwork, arched bays and a circular wheel window. Twin spires with octagonal steeples and Latin crosses rise 190 feet, each with four clocks. The congregation began in 1868, when Reverend Otto Jair purchased two lots and a two-story brick building served as chapel and school. Archbishop John Purcell laid the cornerstone in 1872, and the church was dedicated in 1874 before a crowd of 5,000. Later additions include art glass in 1889, a parochial school in 1914, and a parsonage and monastery in 1928. The church stands on the highest point in Corryville and was included as one of Hannaford's notable works, valued for its detailing and its prominent setting.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Samuel Hannaford (architect); builder unknown","architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition inside and out, in use as a church; open to the public on a restricted basis.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.544654-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003088.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003088/1d11477f2f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003088/1d11477f2f-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._George%27s_Catholic_Church_in_Clifton,_front_and_eastern_side.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._George%27s_Catholic_Church_in_Clifton,_front_and_eastern_side.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985412","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._George%27s_Catholic_Church_(Cincinnati,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7588217"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/st-george-parish-and-newman-center-80003088/"}
