It is described as the finest example of Gothic Revival architecture in Cincinnati, notable for its elaborate carved stone decoration. Very little has changed since the 1882 rebuilding.","narrative":"St. Francis Xavier Church, at 607 Sycamore Street in downtown Cincinnati, is a rectangular stone and brick building measuring 70 by 170 feet. Cincinnati architect Lewis Pickett designed it in 1860 in the Perpendicular Gothic style. The sandstone facade has an ogee-arched central entrance, carved crockets, a rose window and a steeple with gargoyles and finials. Inside, a 75-foot nave, carved altars, oak furnishings and 1924 murals by Charles C. Svendsen survive. A fire in 1882 destroyed the spire and interior; Samuel Hannaford rebuilt the spire, and most interior decoration dates from that restoration. The site holds Catholic worship dating to 1822 and the city's first Catholic church. The Jesuits took it over and renamed it St. Francis Xavier, and an adjoining school founded in 1831 grew into Xavier University. A Jacobethan rectory was added around 1929. The church is regarded as Cincinnati's finest Gothic Revival work and remains well maintained.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Lewis Pickett","architectural_style":"Perpendicular Gothic / Gothic Revival (rectory: Jacobethan)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and carefully maintained, although no parish remains.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.979344-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003087.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003087/631d083ac4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003087/631d083ac4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"MamaGeek at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StFrancisXavierChurch_frontview.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">MamaGeek at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StFrancisXavierChurch_frontview.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989063","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Francis_Xavier_Church_(Cincinnati,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7588019"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/st-francis-xavier-church-80003087/"}
