Its pedestal and base were designed by Samuel Hannaford & Sons, and it is included among that firm's works. It contributes to the character of Clifton Avenue and its surroundings.","narrative":"Standing on the west side of Clifton Avenue at Woolper Avenue in Cincinnati, this 1887 fountain is a public drinking fountain about ten feet high. A single thick, fluted column rises to a mushroom-like cap and sends a stream of water roughly a foot into the air. Water drips from the cap into a catch basin halfway down, then into a small pool at the base. The design served several users: a small cup for birds, the basin for people, the pool for horses and the run-off for dogs. An inscription reads \"Henry Probasco, to the People of Clifton, 1887,\" followed by \"I was Thirsty and Ye Gave Me Drink.\" Probasco also gave Cincinnati the Tyler Davidson fountain. Samuel Hannaford & Sons designed the pedestal and base. The fountain is owned by the City of Cincinnati and sits in a mostly residential area of mixed buildings. It was listed as part of a group of Hannaford works and contributes to the character of Clifton Avenue.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Samuel Hannaford & Sons (designed the pedestal and base)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Exterior condition listed as good; owned by the City of Cincinnati and visible from a public road.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.420919-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003077.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003077/18c1fff2a0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003077/18c1fff2a0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ProbascoFountain.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ProbascoFountain.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"78002074","name":"Clifton Avenue Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/clifton-avenue-historic-district-78002074/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985376","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Probasco_Fountain","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716789"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/probasco-fountain-80003077/"}
