It was built for the mounted police patrol and served as the District 5 headquarters until 1957, when the police moved to Ludlow Avenue. The symmetrical front block has a three-bay facade with a heavy ashlar stone foundation, continuous beltcourses and stringcourses, and arched second-story bays with corbeled lintels. A sandstone frontispiece carries the inscription \"Police Station No. 5,\" the police seal and the date \"A.D. '96.\" Two plainer vernacular wings are attached, and a hayloft bay faces the rear alley. The building sits among middle to late nineteenth-century brick buildings in the Dayton Street Historic District. In 1978 the City Council required the purchaser to maintain and repair it, but a severe fire later gutted the structure and destroyed its original windows. It was recognized as part of a group of works by Hannaford.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Samuel Hannaford & Sons (architect); builder unknown","architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Vacant, with poor interior and exterior condition.
