It is part of a group of works by the noted Cincinnati architect Samuel Hannaford. It was built for George Hummel, son of the founder of the Hummel Construction Company, which built several Cincinnati landmarks.","narrative":"Built in 1892 at 3423 Whitfield Avenue in Cincinnati, this two-and-a-half-story residence was designed by Samuel Hannaford & Sons for George Hummel. Hummel's father, David Hummel, founded the Hummel Construction Company, whose projects included City Hall, the Ohio Mechanics Institute, and the Eden Park Water Tower and Pump Station. The house has an asymmetrical three-bay facade, a corner turret with a domed slate cap, and a heavy two-bay porch. Its walls are notable for patterned layers of thin and wide ashlar blocks above a random ashlar foundation, with a pink granite beltcourse at the second floor. Other details include tall ashlar chimneys, a Palladian-style gable window, and a checkerboard-like porch wall. Recorded as largely unaltered and a good example of late nineteenth century eclectic design, it is now used as multi-family housing. It was listed as one of the works in the thematic group of Samuel Hannaford's buildings in Hamilton County.","period_of_significance":"1892","architect_builder":"Samuel Hannaford & Sons (architect); builder unknown","architectural_style":"Eclectic (late nineteenth century)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as unaltered; exterior condition fair; present use is multi-family residential, with a fire escape added on the north facade.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.802398-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003059.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003059/832f7cacee-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003059/832f7cacee-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GeorgeHummelHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GeorgeHummelHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985352","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Hummel_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5540847"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/hummel-george-house-80003059/"}
