Hannaford designed over 300 buildings in five states and provided Cincinnati with some of its finest Victorian architecture. The inventory notes that the house's original integrity has been drastically altered.","narrative":"This two-story frame house at 768 Derby Avenue in Cincinnati's Winton Place was designed in 1865 by architect Samuel Hannaford, who moved into it from Cheviot and lived there until his death in 1911. It is an asymmetrical Victorian building with four prominent gable ends, intersecting gable roofs, tall brick chimneys, a slate roof and a square tower with a steep hip cap. Bay windows mark the south, west and north gables. Later changes have reduced its original character: aluminum siding covers the walls, and brick infill has enclosed the original Eastlake porch on the south facade. It now houses multiple families. Hannaford, born in England in 1835, came to Cincinnati in 1844, became a charter member of the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and served as mayor of Winton Place from 1882 to 1903. He designed more than 300 buildings, and this residence is one of several of his works grouped together for recognition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Samuel Hannaford (architect); builder unknown","architectural_style":"Victorian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Exterior condition fair; used as multi-family housing; altered with aluminum siding, brick infill enclosing the original Eastlake porch, and a possible northeast addition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.39111-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003056.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003056/fb09e10d14-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003056/fb09e10d14-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel_Hannaford_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel_Hannaford_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985404","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Hannaford_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7411624"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/hannaford-samuel-house-80003056/"}
