It has a symmetrical six-bay facade of smooth sandstone over brick walls, with Italianate detailing. The upper stories keep their original character, with arched hoodmolds, keystones on the center windows, scored pilasters and a continuous lugsill between the second and third floors. A bracketed cornice and short end chimneys finish the building. It is named for H. W. Derby, a book publisher who came to Cincinnati in 1844 and died in 1892. Hannaford had earlier designed another building for Derby at Fourth and Elm Streets in 1884; it burned in 1889. The building sits in the West Fourth Street Historic District among some of the city's finest nineteenth century commercial architecture, and it was included in a group of properties representing Hannaford's work.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Samuel Hannaford (remodeling); Samuel Hannaford and Sons; contractor unknown","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as commercial use; interior in good condition and exterior in fair condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.234163-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003045.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003045/1c3a351b9e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003045/1c3a351b9e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:H.W._Derby_Building.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:H.W._Derby_Building.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985394","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._W._Derby_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5628640"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/derby-h-w-building-80003045/"}
