Stone, born in New Hampshire in 1840, served as a captain in the Rhode Island Infantry during the Civil War. In Cincinnati he joined the Chamber of Commerce, led the City and Suburban Telegraph Association, and sat on the boards of the street railway and gas companies. The asymmetrical random ashlar limestone building has a cylindrical corner turret, a flat wall gable, an open stone porch with a Romanesque entry, projecting bays, wall dormers and tall stone chimneys. Its steep hip roof and conical turret cap give it a vertical emphasis. The original slate roof was replaced with asbestos shingles, and the windows are casement sash. A period account called it one of the handsomest homes in the Queen City. It now stands among twentieth-century buildings, including the Vernon Manor Hotel, and is used for counseling.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Samuel Hannaford & Sons (architect); builder unknown","architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Exterior condition listed as excellent and interior as good; the roof and windows have been altered, and the building is used for counseling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:11.977763-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003041.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003041/1a98a10404-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003041/1a98a10404-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Captain_Stone_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Captain_Stone_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985348","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Stone_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5036809"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/capt-stone-house-80003041/"}
