Burckhardt.","why_significant":"It is one of the works of Cincinnati architect Samuel Hannaford and was included in a thematic group of his buildings. It was the home of A.E. Burckhardt, founder of a well-known men's clothing retailer. Architecturally it combines Victorian, Queen Anne and Romanesque elements.","narrative":"Built in 1887 at 400 Forest Avenue in Cincinnati, this large asymmetrical residence was designed by Samuel Hannaford & Sons for A.E. Burckhardt. Burckhardt was born in Germany, emigrated to the United States at age six, and in 1866 founded the A.E. Burckhardt Co., a Main Street retailer of men's furs and hats. The house is built of random rock-faced limestone ashlar with a slate hip roof, a corner turret with a conical cap and finial, a stone porch, and a projecting gable with a dentiled cornice and carved stone ornament. Its design draws on Victorian, Queen Anne and Romanesque styles. Some changes have occurred, including removal of an Eastlake porte cochere and an east porch balustrade, plus small additions at the turret and rear. The building sits on a corner lot among other large late nineteenth-century residences and now serves as a nursing home. It was listed as part of a group of buildings by Hannaford.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Samuel Hannaford & Sons (architect); builder unknown","architectural_style":"Victorian, incorporating Queen Anne and Romanesque elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a nursing home; interior and exterior condition listed as good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.868484-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003038.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003038/a4f09f50dc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003038/a4f09f50dc-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A._E._Burckhardt_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A._E._Burckhardt_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985342","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._E._Burckhardt_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4647714"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/burckhardt-a-e-house-80003038/"}
