It adds to the streetscape of mid-to-late nineteenth-century homes. It is also tied to the Hollencamp family, a merchant family who ran a brewery and later an ice company in the city.","narrative":"Built in 1871 at 339 East Second Street in Xenia, this two-story painted brick house shows the shift toward High Victorian Italianate design. It has an irregular plan, a rock-faced foundation, a stone water table, a four-bay facade with a pavilion and a polygonal bay, and a heavy boxed cornice with a decorated frieze and brackets. Comparison with an 1874 county atlas picture shows few changes, mainly the loss of the roof cupola and balustrade and some porch and fence alterations. Inside are thirteen rooms, six wood-mantel fireplaces and a carved wooden staircase. Bernard Hollencamp, a German immigrant who came to Xenia from Cincinnati, had the house built beside his brewery. The brewery was later succeeded by a creamery, a bottling company and an ice house, and his son Daniel founded the city's first artificial ice company. The house is believed to be by Samuel Patterson. It was listed for its architecture and its link to Xenia's merchant class.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific date 1871)","architect_builder":"Believed to be the work of Samuel Patterson","architectural_style":"Transition to High Victorian Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in good condition; some rooms have been made into apartments.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.269867-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80003029.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003029/31bfa2474c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80003029/31bfa2474c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hollencamp_House_in_Xenia.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hollencamp_House_in_Xenia.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988724","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollencamp_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5881225"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/greene-county/hollencamp-house-80003029/"}
