Drexel Avenue on a corner lot in Bexley, an affluent suburb of Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, completed in 1926 and designed by New York architect Alfred Hopkins.","why_significant":"The nomination holds it to be significant for architectural and historic reasons. It is an excellent example of Jacobethan Revival architecture in Franklin County, designed by Alfred Hopkins, a noted designer of penitentiaries and fine homes on Long Island. It was built for Franz Huntington, a prominent Columbus civic and business leader.","narrative":"Completed in 1926, this large stone-and-stucco house on a corner lot in Bexley, near Columbus, was designed by New York architect Alfred Hopkins in the Jacobethan Revival style. The irregular plan, steeply pitched slate gable roofs, projecting bays, stone-mullioned windows and complex chimneys are typical of the style. The recessed entrance sits beneath a pointed arch with a hoodmould carrying a Roman numeral date and shields marked with an H. Inside, the woodwork is the outstanding feature, with moulded plaster ceilings in several rooms and a dining room with a paneled dark-wood ceiling and decorated kingpost trusses. Some furnishings came from a Dubuque home demolished in 1965. The house was built for Franz Huntington, president of Huntington National Bank, an organizer of Midland Mutual Life Insurance Company, and a supporter of Children's Hospital and the Columbus Gallery of Fine Art. It was listed for its architecture and its association with him.","period_of_significance":"1900- (specific date 1926)","architect_builder":"Alfred Hopkins","architectural_style":"Jacobethan Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Stated to be in excellent condition; occupied and used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.014445-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80002999.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002999/864319b43f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002999/864319b43f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Strongdar","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Franz_Huntington_House_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Strongdar</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Franz_Huntington_House_1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988354","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137803762"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/franklin-county/huntington-franz-house-80002999/"}
