Rushville was one of the earliest towns in Fairfield County and a stop on Zane's Trace. It also keeps an almost unaltered 1920s village setting, with log, Federal, Gothic Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne buildings among many simple frame background buildings.","narrative":"Rushville is a small rural village in Fairfield County, Ohio, laid out along a ridge top on Main Street, with Market Street and Bremen Avenue crossing it. The historic district holds 92 buildings, mostly frame houses, with a small commercial core of two-story brick blocks. It began as a stop on Zane's Trace, the early land route from Wheeling to Maysville, and the Rushcreek crossing once charged tolls. Buildings range from an early log hotel stop and a Federal brick house with a fanlight entrance to an 1878 Gothic Revival church, an 1884 Italianate house and a 1912 theater building. Bypassed by U.S. Route 22, the village saw little development after the 1920s, so tree-lined streets, brick sidewalks and turn-of-the-century L-shaped frame houses remain. The district is valued as a rare, largely intact example of a small rural Ohio town. Songwriter Benjamin Hanby was a native of the village.","period_of_significance":"c.1810-1930","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Log, Federal, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked excellent, good, fair and deteriorated.
